Our voices are powerful, and they are needed, however; translating them into action can create further change. Here are some different groups that I have supported, that I think are great ways to take action:

  1. Sign this petition: https://www.change.org/p/mayor-jacob-frey-justice-for-george-floyd

Although all the police officers have now been charged, this petition is much more than just looking for the police officers to be charged. This demonstrates the number of people committed to ensuring justice occurs in all phases of the legal system. There are also many other petitions on this website that you can sign!

2. Donate to Black Visions Collective: https://www.blackvisionsmn.org/

Any donation is an immensely valuable donation. This group focuses on healing and transformative justice principles and supporting black leadership within Minnesota. This group utilises history to learn from other’s successes and mistakes to shape a movement that creates long-term change.

3. Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCgLa25fDHM

100% of the advertisement revenue from this YouTube video will be donated to the associations that offer protester bail funds, help pay for family funerals, and advocacy.

4. Donate to The Bail Project: https://bailproject.org/

This group aims to combat mass incarceration and establish an alternative that focuses upon the presumption of innocence. The group provides free bail assistance to low-income individuals who are legally presumed innocent to avoid the detrimental consequences of being placed in prison while awaiting trial.

5. Buy clothing from Clothing The Gap: https://clothingthegap.com.au/

100% of the profits raised by Clothing The Gap actively support Aboriginal health promotion and education programs throughout Victoria. Their clothing is not just fashion but a conversation starter. A conversation which can inform and inspire others to act, closing the gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians.

6. Listen.

Listen to their stories. Listen to their experiences. Listen to their voices. The world of headlines covers up the reality of human experiences. We can all take time to listen as that is how we can become educated and educate the people around us.

There are many other groups and organisations doing incredible work to support the African American community in America and the Aboriginal community in Australia. The groups above are some that have particularly inspired me but there may be others that inspire you, and that is great. The end goal may seem far away, but each step is a step closer to a better world.
